1998 Home Run Derby (Ken Griffey Jr. goes off!) | #MLBAtHome

1998 Home Run Derby (Ken Griffey Jr. goes off!) | #MLBAtHome (c) MLB Vault

(c) MLB Vault Let’s rewatch the 1998 Home Run Derby from Coors Field, where Derby legend Ken Griffey Jr. went off! #MLBAtHome x @T-Mobile.

This goes without saying but Ken Griffey Jr has the most aesthetically pleasing swing of all time.

Watched for griffey highlights, ended up watching the whole thing! The 90s were amazing.

35 HRs at the break. He could’ve broken the HR record that year, without cheating, had he stayed healthy. Oh what could’ve been. Still one of the greatest.

Love the throwback. Seeing all the great names I remember when I was really into baseball. Just doesn’t seem the same these days.

The ovation McGwire got was amazing. It’s easy to forget how much the fans loved him back then.

nobody talking about Bruce Buffer. one of the best announcers ever.

Griffey was just such a cool cat, walk’s in with that swag and his hat backwards lol legend

The Kid truly could’ve been something special had he stayed healthy. IMO the greatest pure talent of a ball player ever!!!

Wanted to watch Griff and McGwire and this was the greatest hour or so in my life. I remember watching this back when I was 16. 90’s baseball was so different and I miss it.

Damm Palmeiro one of the most complete hitters he was so underrrated, i don’t care about the roids he had such a natural power swing and put great numbers!

Call me crazy but I liked this format. You would get a more ambient feel and seeing the camera track the ball was entertaining. Yes, it was slow but they could tweak it so you are not allowed to have so many takes to speed up the process.

As a kid this was my favorite year such an amazing time.

I was in the left field stands that day. I didn’t get a ball. But it sure was a lot of fun!

One of the best time of my life!! I was just a kid!!

Mike Piazza was the greatest home run derby commentator ever. He would have been a great color commentator for the games too. He is freakin hilarious

When I was growing up, every kid on the playground put their hats on backwards after the Derbys to emulate Griffey. He was everyone’s favorite player. Would be awesome if a Tatis or Ohtani can capture a generation in that same way.

Watching this now, years later. I forgot about some of these names. And seeing a young Alex Rodriguez, wow. If only people knew what would happen over the next few years.

Impresionante todas esas estrellas, mucha nostalgia, esa es la poca cuando yo pasaba todo el da hablando de Bisbol

I was 19, working as a courier in the Deep Ellum section of downtown Dallas, and playing in my first punk rock band, but I’ll always remember that time as the Home Run Summer. Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire chasing the asterisk of Roger Maris.

Man watching this hits the nostalgia in the right spot

5/17/98: David Wells’ Perfect Game

5/17/98: David Wells' Perfect Game (c) MLB Vault

(c) MLB Vault Minnesota Twins 0 at New York Yankees 4, F — The season, up to this point, had not been an easy one for David Wells. Being yanked from his previous start in …

The coolest part about this Perfect Game was David Wells’ admission that he was extremely hungover before the game after a late night of heavy drinking lol. What a boss.

Ahh classic Yankee Stadium..even as a Mets fan this gives me goosebumps. The energy in that place was incredible. If a Yanks pitcher threw a perfect game in today’s Yankee Stadium the noise wouldnt reach half of what is was on this day. Shame really.

The 1998 Yankees will ALWAYS be my all-time favorite season!!! Nostalgia strikes again!!!

The truly impressive part is that he did this WITH Chuck Knoblauch on the field!

He had stated after the game that he was nursing a “Skull Rattling” hangover the entire game. Who else could do that other than Wells? Such a full blown bad ass!

There will never, neeeeeever be another team like the 1998 Yankees. Period

Thank you MLB Classics for making these iconic moments in history available.

I will never forget this game. I was 10 years old, I was so happy, I cried. Then I learned years later, he was hungover! That makes this, in my opinion, the single greatest achievement in baseball history! I’ve been hungover more times than I can count, and I can barely take a piss when I’m hungover… but this beast pitches a perfect game!? That is some superhuman shit, man!My dad was drunk during this game, and at that last out, he poured a beer over his head while jumping up and down! He then called his brother, who also poured a beer over his own head! After it was all over, my Dad and I went outside and lit off some fireworks in celebration! A little over a year later… Cone pitches a perfect game and literally, the same exact thing happens!

I went to the next home start for wells, and he took another no no into the 7th or 8th inning. what a year it was. year after, I was supposed to go to Cones Perfecto, but it was rainy out, we thought they would call the game, so we stayed home to watch it…and was soooooo upset we missed history. go yanks! 2014

What gives me goosebumps is that Cone gives him a hug at the end..

I love my team. May 17, 1998…i was 15 years old. I was in attendance. Never experienced anything like this ever before and still til this day. #YankeesForLife

I was at this game and it was amazing! Yankee stadium was rocking after that last out! i missed a foul balll by 4 or 5 seats. Just seeing something this amazing in person is breathtaking! Well Well Wells

It’s nice to take a break from the Yankees’ 2013 season and come here to relive some of the team’s fonder moments…

Great Moment in Yankee History

As a lifetime Yankees fan, the mid to late 90’s were an absolutely magical time. So many great players, so much total dominance, especially this 98 team who started 0-3 and finished with a combined record of 125-50. I know most Yankees fans loved Jeter the most but he was never in my top 10 favorite Yankees of those teams. David Wells was my favorite followed by Mariano Rivera, Scott Brosius, Paul O’Neil and Bernie Williams. Those teams really spoiled us Yankee fans. Ever since then, anything less than a World Series Title is unacceptable and one measly title in 20 years is absolutely unacceptable. They’ve got the horses to do it in 2021 so let’s see what happens!

Exactly 22 years ago on this date. David Boomer Wells tosses el perfecto against the Minnesota Twins. Big Yankee fan growing up. Dream come true! Very cool!

was at this game. my first game at yankee stadium. incredible!

I love that Wells had a raging hangover for this game and stated he was “half-drunk.” I love David Wells.

I’m from Cleveland and HATED this team especially after the ALCS. But NO TEAM WILL EVER be as GOOD as this team!

The 1998 Yankees the team of a lifetime.

1978 AL East Playoff: Yankees @ Red Sox

1978 AL East Playoff: Yankees @ Red Sox (c) MLB Vault

(c) MLB Vault New York Yankees 5 at Boston Red Sox 4, F — For two bitter rivals, it all came down to this one-game showdown at historic Fenway Park. The winner would earn …

Red Sox fan ; biggest play of the game was Piniella’s play in the 9th. Fenway wasn’t built up like it is now, it was almost 5:30pm and the sun was a sinking fireball hanging over the rim of the old 3B side roof boxes. Remy could have had a walk off inside the park home run, except for one of the greatest, but overlooked plays in MLB history.

What a season…what a pennant race…what a year (1978). What a time (the 70s)

I’ve always said the key to the Yankees victory wasn’t necessarily Dent’s homer, but rather Lou Piniella’s defense in the sun-splashed RF. Twice he thwarted Sox rallies, first in the bottom of the 6th when Lynn drove one into the corner and Lou made the basket catch with the runners on the move, then in the 9th with the last second snare of Remy’s one-hop liner and Burleson rounding 2nd. If that Remy drive gets by Lou, with Remy’s speed he scores or at the very least ends up on 3rd, tie game, with Rice and Yaz coming up.

IMHO the greatest game in baseball history–ESPECIALLY given the rivalry and the dramatic road each team took to get to that point. So many people forget that Boston won 10 or their last 12 games (including 8 straight at the end of the season) to erase a 3 1/2 game deficit and force a playoff—-a team without heart couldn’t have done that!! All that’s remembered is that they lost a 14 game lead—fans don’t remember the gutsy Sox comeback at the end of the year. Two out–bottom of the ninth–Gossage against Yaz with the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate—it doesn’t get any more dramatic than that!!

That was helluva battle Fisk had with Gossage in the eighth! I especially love how the pace moved along between pitches — and this was even considered slow back then.

I’ve just finished watching this game for about the 8th time, and it never gets old. And much as I’m a Yankee fan, it just has to be said that Boston was one whale of a team. They battled till the end. Very few times have I felt too much compassion for a losing Red Sox team, but this is one of those times. The way the season of 1978 played out, you would’ve thought it was designed by a higher authority who wanted to thrill and entertain the masses of those two northeastern cities. I just don’t have enough words to say about this season and this game.

Hands down the best of times.

The greatest of baseball announcers, Phil Rizzuto, Bill White and Frank Messer…Scooter was one of a kind, White was one of the best and Messer was no slouch…they don’t come any better than this terrific trio 👍👍👌

1:35:40 Russell Earl Dent!!!! And the phenomenal call by the great Bill White! Yankee Baseball on WPIX–the BEST!!!!!!

I like that they let pitchers pitch back then. Today, no way in the world Gossage would have been kept in the game for 2 2/3 giving up 5 hits and 2 runs!

ran home from school this day , didn’t want to miss an inning , what a game

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! for uploading this complete game!!! I was all of 13-years old when this game was aired live – I remember coming home from school and tuning into watch this. And to see the entire game again is just magical!!! Gotta LOVE the Internet!!! Everybody credits Bucky “F**king” Dent with the game winner… but it was Reggie Jackson who hit the game-winner!!! THANK YOU so much for this upload!!! SO MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

Bill White a fine, underrated announcer.

In the 1970’s the Yankees terrorized 3 teams: Red Sox, Royals, and Dodgers.

Great game and right down to the wire and how about those announcers fort he Yankees. I so much enjoyed listening to them as a kid in the late 1970’s…

There is something about these games from the 70s that is so fun to watch again…..the game seems so pure.

I love Phil Rizzuto’s announcing! He is sorely missed.

Given the context, the most intense game I’ve ever seen.

Bucky Dent would go on to be the MVP of the World Series that year.

Everyone looks at Dent’s HR but Reggie’s monster was the game winner.

2003 NLCS, Game 7: Marlins @ Cubs

2003 NLCS, Game 7: Marlins @ Cubs (c) MLB Vault

(c) MLB Vault Florida Marlins 9 at Chicago Cubs 6, F — The Series ending Game 7 starting off poorly for the Chicago Cubs, who were still reeling for a devastating Game 6.

“This Miguel Cabrera is going to be a special player”…They weren’t wrong

I don’t I’ve ever heard a stadium that quiet after that final out. I’ve heard funerals louder than that

2003 Marlins had one of the most underrated lineups ever. 2 speedsters in Pierre and Castillo who always got on base, then 4 HR threats in a row. Plus Beckett, Penny, Pavano and Willis in the starting rotation. WOW.

The Kerry Wood homer was the loudest Wrigley ever was…ever.

Decided to watch this after watching the reds choke against giants in the 2012 Nlds. Didn’t know Dusty Baker was the manager for this team too lol.

At 36:33 I thought for sure that hit was it and the Cubs were going to the world series. Haven’t been so excited in my life.

In the 5th inning, Kerry Wood obviously lost his control and what did the cameras show Dusty Baker doing?? Just sitting on the bench, toothpick in mouth, chilling and watching the game!He was so nonchalant during a crucial game AND he didnt have anyone warming up!, the Marlins on the other hand had already goone through 2 pitchers and had Josh Beckett warming in the bullpen just in case. That’s why the Cubs lost, horrible managing

It’ll be a footnote now that the Cubs have finally won it all. But I have NEVER heard a stadium so quiet as that third out. It might as well have been a rec league game. And then they showed that elderly couple, both of them likely in their 80’s, in Cubs gear…neither of them having been old enough to see the then last World Series title for the Cubs in 1908. They almost certainly died before last November’s Game 7 to end all Game 7’s and it still kinda makes me sad. Bart Giamatti said baseball is a game designed to break your heart. Even as a guy with no dog in the fight, I never felt any more strongly about that then after this game.

36:33You gotta wonder how something like this didn’t spark them to victory…

this world series was amazing being a cubbie fan since 94 i was so hyped for this series but it was really unfortunate what happened on game six.

I always forget how loaded this Marlins team was – look at that lineup. Pierre, Castillo, Pudge, Miggy, Lee, with Encarnacion/Conine batting 7th, AG batting 8th was a good hitter, and Beckett, Pavano, Dontrelle Willis leading the rotation – one heck of a good team.

That Wood Homer still gives me chills! I felt like screaming and cheering right now almost forgetting this was not a live game and that we don’t win it. We’ll never get this close again at least not with the current cheap-ass penny-pinchers running the club

AWESOME GAME! Much Deserved tWin for the BEST TEAM In the game that year! So much talent on that Marlin team..WOW!!

The 2003 Marlins were LOADED! A young Juan Pierre, rookie sensation Miguel Cabrera, Pudge Rodriguez in his prime, veteran Jeff Conine, a young Josh Beckett, dominant Dontrelle Willis, Ugeath Urbina to close games and 72 year old manager Jack McKeon. These guys were special and no matter how many runs behind, this team never gave up. To top it off, this team beat the two most storied franchises in back to back series. They came back 3 games to 1 vs the Cubs (which most remember for the “Bartman” game 6 8th inning the Marlins scored 8 runs in) and dominated the Yankees in 6 games to win the whole thing.

This was the last Game 7 we played before this years WS. Watching this game brought back memories and also makes me appreciate the WS win we just got. Go Cubs Go!!!!

I was at that game. It was like walking into a funeral from the get go. Even on the way in walking down Sheffield. Game 6 the night before completely deflated the fan base.

Now the Marlins and Cubs are having a playoff rematch in the wild card round… Imagine if the Marlins beat the Cubs again lmao

I was wondering what emotions were going through Cubs fans during this time. Perhaps i can ask you a few Qs?After game 6 did you have a feeling of “we may lose game 7”?Were you looking for someone to blame ?(players, management, Bartman)? And even during game 7, did you somehow get a feeling you still wouldnt win?

Cubs didnt win, but man oh man what a moment.

What a great comeback team.

1989 World Series, Game 3: Athletics @ Giants

1989 World Series, Game 3: Athletics @ Giants (c) MLB Vault

(c) MLB Vault Oakland Athletics 13 at San Francisco Giants 7, F — The first-ever all-Bay Area World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A’s, known as …

This was an amazing World Series to watch.

1:02:42, that foul ball is the one my bro catches! Still got the ball after 25 yrs! Shame they didn’t show him catching it.

After 28 years of waiting (I was away in France for the series)-I finally get to see how it happened. Because of the quake and the internet wasn’t yet working-I didn’t find out who won the series till Nov 10th. SO nice to finally see the actual games themselves! -Oakland A’s fan since 1971.

This game to me marked the end point of what I would consider to be the real “golden age” of televised network baseball. 1989 of course, was the final year that both ABC and NBC got to cover baseball before the contract moved over to CBS for the next four years. It began with the epic sixth game of the 1975 World Series (that marked the moment in which you could safely argue when TV really started to “understand” baseball) and Carlton Fisk’s iconic home run. It really came of age in 1983 for NBC when they poached Vin Scully from CBS and made him the #1 baseball announcer (forming a team w/ Joe Garagiola and in 1989, Tom Seaver) and teamed Bob Costas up w/ Tony Kubek to be the #2 team. For ABC, it was in 1985, when they dropped Howard Cosell for good and promoted Tim McCarver to the “A-team” w/ Al Michaels and Jim Palmer for that year’s World Series.

Hilarious that, right at the time they were making fun of Mike Moore’s hitting ability, he pops a double over Butler’s head. First hit by an AL pitcher in 10 years.

1989 proved that the Oakland A’s are the kings of bay area baseball.Theydon’t have to play second fiddle to any team in the bay area.

I really appreciate this video. I’m a Oakland A’s fan from Caracas, Venezuela, and I’m very happy to have the opportunity to watch this game complete. When Oakland won that title I was 8 years old. Thank you. Just one comment, this is the Game 4, not Game 3. Thanks.

He always looked angry and had a lot of energy. However, he was a great team player. One of the most exciting baseball players in history.

One of the best assembled teams top to bottom in MLB history—the A’s had pitching depth, loads of power, speed and defense.

I remember watching the world series in 89. I love the A’s. But in game 3 when the Giants pitcher in the first inning threw 2 inside pitches to Cansaco. The announcers defended the pitcher saying 2 inside pitches the second dangerously at Cansecos head they and the fans got all over canseco saying no way was he throwing at his head and vilified Canseco is bull sh#t. It could have done serious damage maybe ending his career or even worse. Everyone always put the A’s down. The fans in Oakland was cheered for both teams not in Frisco though. In tired of the negativity towards Oakland. They did everything first including the first 4 World champions. And 3 came in 5th 6th and 7th years they were there. If took the Giants 50 something years to do their 1st.

Dear MLB, PLEASE upload the actual game 3. It’s worthy of upload because among other things, it set what was then a record of 7 home runs in a game: 5 by the A’s: D Henderson (2), Phillips, Canseco, Lansford; Giants: Williams, Bathe

Amazing Oakland won the 89 series in only three games. I guess is was a miracle.

It should be noted that this is Game 4, not Game 3. It is still a great game though.

Rickey Henderson was incredible. Loved it when the Blue Jays got him in ’93.

Best world series ever!

Welch was a 17 game winner that year with a WHIP comparable to Stew and gave up the least HRs on the staff. Storm Davis won 19 games but may have benefitted more from the juggernaut offense that took care of business against Robinson and the rest of that pitching staff. You never know, but the A’s were strong in all areas, including starting pitching 1-4, and had something to prove from the ’88 series.

I agree that he’s best known as an A. Just saying as a Jays fan it was great when they got him.

I’d like to see the 1984 Detroit Tigers vs the 1989 Oakland A’s in a 7 game series. I’ll pick the Tigers 4-3

I never said that I was necessarily rooting for the Giants. There’s no doubt that the A’s were the superior team (then again, so was the case in 1988 and 1990). My point is that one should have to wonder how things would’ve turned out had the World Series not gone through the 10 interruption due to the earthquake. Of course, the eventual WS MVP Dave Stewart wouldn’t have been able to pitch so soon due to the long lay off.

I was wacted this series during my senior year of high school in ’89 on AFRTS while being stationed with my dad in Germany.
