1999 ALDS, Game 5: Red Sox at Indians

1999 ALDS, Game 5: Red Sox at Indians (c) MLB Vault

(c) MLB Vault Boston Red Sox 12 at Cleveland Indians 8, F — If the Red Sox were going to complete their comeback from an 0-2 deficit, they needed to do it without Pedro …

Pedro is the best pitcher of the modern era, top 5 of all time. He was dominant in an era where guys were hitting 70 Home runs and batting .350. His dominance is unparalleled.

Pedro got those 6 innings without a fastball. Just curves and change ups and guts. I used to love those great offensive Indians teams of 90’s but in that game I obliviously I was with Pedro, the best pitcher at his peak in MLB ever.

59:40, Thome’s 2nd HR1:00:46, Consequences of Thome’s 2nd HR, Pedro M. start warming1:14:25, Let’s Play Ball! Pedro M. entrance1:59:20, Boston go up 8 – 112:30:23, The End.

What Pedro did in this game was crazy. One of the greatest post season performances.

Pedro Martinez, a well-deserved HOF

Pedro! Nomah! Troy O’Leary! Hell, even Jose Offerman and all his glorious errors….Oh, man, I miss these Red Sox.

“And there’s Pedro in the Boston pen… it’ll be interesting to see if he comes in and what he’s got when he does…” WELP the rest is history. What a game

One of the greatest pitching performances of all time.

What a memorable game and series! One I’ll never forget. I don’t know why O’Leary had a such a great game but then did nothing the next two years on the Sox. Great team that year, although nothing like ’04

Pedro should’ve been the MVP that year

I was at this game and remember a lot of it like yesterday. When O’Leary hit the 2nd HR, it was already clear to everyone that Pedro with no fastball was still, maybe even more unhittable, and a deafeningly quiet hopelessness overtook Jacobs Field. It hit me walking out with my friends that he hadn’t surrendered a single hit in those six relief innings. The most amazing pitcher I ever saw in person.

This was the last game for the Indians in the 1990’s and it summed up perfectly the six year run they had (’94 -99): Awesome offense that was ultimately let down by mediocre pitching. This is exactly why they never won a World Series in that time span.

Pedro Martinez pitched the game of his life that night! Seven Perfect Innings en route to the ALCS, before suffering a shellacking by the Yankees that year.

At one point the announcers asked Cleveland fans to vote for their favorite Indians post season memory…walking Nomar intentionally twice to pitch to O’Leary probably wasn’t it.

This game happend 20 years ago today, Go Red Sox! 🙂

I must say Pedro Martinez was one of the best pitchers in getting good hitters to chase pitches. And Justin Verlander may be the best active pitcher right now in getting hitters to chase the most often.

This will be my favorite pedro game of all time, These fans knew when pedro went in these indians hitters knew they would not score on pedro let alone another hit, and Pedro just shut them down.

All that Indians lineup depth and firepower, yet they basically lost to a Boston team that was basically Pedro, Nomar, and 20 guys named Moe.A rare series where individual beat team.

This is the game I started loving pedro at

When Pedro Martinez came into the game, you could hear the air just get sucked right out of the stadium!!!

9/6/95: Cal Ripken Becomes Baseball’s New Iron Man

9/6/95: Cal Ripken Becomes Baseball's New Iron Man (c) MLB Vault

(c) MLB Vault California Angels 2 at Baltimore Orioles 4, F — They called it the record that could never be broken. But Cal Ripken, Baltimore Orioles superstar, came to work for …

Unbreakable baseball records:511 wins (Cy Young)110 shutouts (Walter Johnson)5,714 strikeouts (Nolan Ryan)2,632 consecutive games (Cal Ripken)

This is the greatest baseball moment i witnessed live on TV. I was born in 1982

One of the classiest players ever…I’m so proud to be an Orioles fan!

The record that will never be broken.

The greatest moment in modern sports history

1:45:35 was the last pitch before the game became official (if you don’t feel like searching for it)

It’ll never be broken because it takes a combination of being fortunate and Good Enough to Play that long. As for Ricky, I think his best record is for lead-off homers.

One of my favorite players ever. 90’s baseball fans were a lot more real than today’s fans. Miss these simpler days.

I remember watching this at home, still amazing

I was there the night before (2130). I believe this is the only record in baseball (2632) that is nearly impossible to break with all the injuries and early departures, etc. I’m a O’s fan since born, being I’m from Baltimore!

Remember watching when it happened and I’m watching in 2019 and still gets me right in the feels!

Seen this live, with my cousin who is no longer alive, remember him telling me the rarity of this achievement. It will always be the most amazing thing I’ve ever watched in baseball.

this record is for all eternity, nobody will get anywhere near it, ever

Cal Ripken Jr. one of the all-time greats in my book!!!! I still have this whole game which was televised by ESPN on VHS. Wish HTS would have shown the National Anthem here as it was a classic by Bruce Hornsby and Branford Marsalis.

love cal ripken jr, he’s awesome. loved seeing him do the Postseason games. was such a treat. he’s so cool.

20 years ago…I was 4 going on 5 and this is one of my earliest memories. The goosebumps i felt then still resonate while re watching this. My mother and i were sitting on the floor in front of the tv looking up watching, eyes glued to the static filled screen knowing what we were seeing will most likely never be done in our life time ever again in baseball. My father sat on the recliner a few feet behind us on the edge of the seat staring as well, trying to hold back tears. Hands on his jaw as if completely captured in the moment.

My all-time favorite player next to Chipper Jones. One of the classiest players in the game and played for the love of baseballAnd what’s even more awesome.. His son, Ryan, is now in the Orioles organization.

this is one record that will never be broken…thanks Cal

One of the most remarkable achievements in all of baseball. They used to say that Gehrig’s record would never be broken. But now folks just might say that about Cal Ripken, given that he not only broke Gehrig’s streak, he destroyed it. Astonishing!

one of the greatest moment sin baseballs 100+ years of history, and i was alive to witness it….the great one, the iron man.

(c) MLB Vault New York Yankees 3 at San Diego Padres 0, F — The powerhouseYankees finished up the sweep of the Padres for their 125th win of the season and 24th World …

GREATEST MLB TEAM OF ALL TIME.

It was a privilege to watch this team play. I’d say they are the greatest team ever.

The perfect ending of the perfect season for the perfect team.

George Costanza provided vital input to get the Yankees to hit better.

Best Yankee team of all time!!!! I was in the hospital at the time of this series and I can remember yelling so loud! lol what a great sweep! RIP Gywnn! We miss you!

Congratulations to the Yankees on winning the 1998 World Series.

Best team I ever saw. Growing up in the 90s as a kid I fell in love with the 98 Yankees never seen a team so dominant from beginning to end. 125 wins in total

And the best season in MLB history. 125 wins including the postseason.

1998 yankees.BEST TEAM OF ALL TIME

The Yankees were definitely a better team than the San Diego padres in this world series.

Most awesome baseball team I’ve ever seen! 125 wins!

Sigh good times in 1998 for san diego. Its sad most of the good memories happened when the padres played at the old jack Murphy stadium. 1984 and in the late 90s. The only good memories we have had since petco park opened was when Hoffman broke the all time saves record. Ownership continues to refuse to put a real championship world class franchise on the field. Petco park needs to be filled with padres fans. Not dodgers and giants fans..

bunt with the bases loaded and 2 outs, NL Baseball at it’s finest.

BEST TEAM EVER!! 75 games over .500

To be honest. If it wasn’t for El Duque in game 4 of the alcs against cleveland. they wouldn’t made it to the WS in 98. Thank you El Duque

Bravo Yanks i’m proud of my Boys (referring to the Yanks) for winning this World Series

Best team ever!!

Buen juego , y buenos pichers ,felicidades para el club Yankee,Bendiciones para ellos,3;38PM,9/25/2018/,Raleigh,NC.

Just watching all the postseason moments of Rivera, he will be missed 🙁 along with Pettitte.

We will miss you Mariano Rivera:(

RIP Claudell Washington. Left us June 10th 2020. You were my absolute favorite eighties Braves player. You personified coolness in the right outfield and at the plate! I would never miss one of your at bats on The Superstation. That batting stance, swing and steely eyed look of determination have never been matched in my opinion! To the Washington family….my condolences.

This was without question the wildest game I’ve ever seen. Brawl after brawl, fans getting into it, it was madness.

What a day that was! The Padres-Braves drama in the afternoon followed by the Olympic closing ceremonies that evening.

Thanks for posting this! It was my first year as a Padres Season ticket holder, front row along the 3rd base side and I really saw these guys in action a few times a week. One of my favorite teams of all time! It brings back great memories.

These are the voices of my childhood i miss these voices …I Have lived in South Texas my entire life but The superstation and these voices made me a Braves fan for life…RIP Skip & Pete

I had no idea Bob Gibson was a pitching coach for the Braves! One hell of a pitcher for the Cardinals.

I miss the Braves’ broadcasting team and the games on WTBS. Game was always on at my house.

25 years later, still classic.

Would really like to see a “30 For 30” made about this game.

So fortunate to be watching this live on that Sunday, thankful for WTBS! It was a great day!

I miss this type of baseball. Bring it back

Ahhhhhhh…during the time I fell in love with baseball as an 8 year old kid. Dale Murphy is my all-time favorite athlete and have been a diehard Braves fan. This was when they wore real stir ups and not the paint on’s lol!!

Hoy en el 2020 recuerdo 1984 cuando Padres fue por primera vez a una serie mundial era un maravilloso equipo 💯⚾⚾ PADRES FAN

Best part was Murphy’s diving catch to end the game.

“Well, I’m thrown out. Too many pitchers throwing at hitters. Let’s leave Bob Gibson in charge.” Lol!🤣🤣🤣

The baseball version of the Malice at the Palace.

I remember watching this one back in the day. We was loving it!

RIP Donnie Moore, Rick Mahler, Pascual Perez, Alan Wiggins, Tony Gwynn

Former Yankee Teammates Won The World Series 1978 They Are On The Field For This One Nettles and Gossage (Padres) and Chris Chambliss (Braves)!

The announcers covered the fights like professionals… Champs Summers a softball player who got signed… Got a love the 80s

(c) MLB Vault American League 7 at National League 7, T/11 — There were home runs, stolen bases and amazing catches (not the least of which was Torii Hunter’s snag that …

11:58 Best player introduction of all time

Even this close to their demise, the Expos still had some very good players.

5:00 That was a hilarious moment! They just moved like it was no big deal.

The “Let Them Play” chant is one of my all time favorite sports moments.

As a Brewer fan this was an all time low. The Brewers were horrible and well on their way towards 56-106, then to add insult to injury it would figure that the all star game would be an epic disaster. Honestly Miller Park wasn’t completely ready. They’ve added so much to the ball park since and the team is at least respectable now compared to then. I really wish Selig wasn’t so impatient and waited until the team was sold before hosting the All Star game. Miller Park hosting an All Star game today would be sooo much better now.

34:04 Hunter robs Bonds homerun 57:55 Bonds hits homerun

I liked what Matt Morris did, writing #DK57 on his hands and bring Darryl Kiel’s jersey❤️

Talk about tragedy: the 2002 MLB All-Star Game will go down in infamy as one of the worst MLB All-Star Games in history, due to the maximum use of the 30 men and the controversial 7-7 tie!

Me acuerdo como ahora de ese juego de estrella fue el primero que vi de tantos y lo que falta si dios quiere 💪💪💪💪⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾

As a Braves fan, never get tired of seeing Hank Aaron, Bob Uecker and Warren Spahn throw out the first pitch with Molitor. Can you also imagine how Jose Vidro felt not only to shake Ozzie Smith’s hand, but to stand next to him during the lineup announcement and national anthems? I bet that is a memory he will forever live with. And Jorge Posada’s son took off faster than Ichiro

“I have written a few songs, I tell people I have more no hitters than Nolan Ryan…”-Ernie Harwell, 2002😂😂

It is hard to believe that Adam Dunn was actually hitting .300 at the All Star break in 2002! He’s lucky to hit .220 now.

A great hidden gem in this game at 1:14:20 when Bob Uecker joins Buck and McCarver in the booth – Uecker is in rare form and I never heard McCarver laugh this hard before or since.

1:14:32- we can never get enough of Bob Uecker making baseball jokes, he’s hilarious. BTW, I’ve got to check out those Miller Lite commercials he was in, sometimes with John Madden!!!

Honestly this would have gone over so much more smoothly if they hadn’t taken so long at the end. It reeked of incompetence and just engendered such a negative reaction to whatever decision they’d make.

I was there in person. Can’t believe that it ended in a tie after 11 innings, but I could understand that both sides were out of position players.

10th inning- Adam Dunn was THAT CLOSE to preventing the tie. Just a few more feet from a happier ending

Came here for the Torii catch

RIP Tony Gwynn
