1984 World Series, Game 5: Padres @ Tigers
(c) MLB Vault San Diego Padres 4 at Detroit Tigers 8, F — Game 5 started out poorly for the Padres when Mark Thurmond gave up three runs in the first inning. But they …
BRING BACK WORLD SERIES DAYTIME BASEBALL!
The 84 TIGERS started out 35-5, and were the FIRST team since the 27 Yankees to go wire to wire in FIRST Place! It was the YEAR OF THE TIGERS!!
Look how much faster the pace of play is – batters staying in the box. Love hearing all the anecdotes from Vin Scully, those brown Padres uniforms, stirrups, Tiger Stadium.
“Ball one on Kirk. Here’s the pitch..he swings and hits a long drive to right, AND IT IS A HOME RUN FOR GIBSON!! A three run homer! The Tigers lead it 8-4 in the eighth inning!” R.I.P. Ernie Harwell, radio voice of the Tigers
Loved those 84 Tigers….Trammell and Whitaker both should be in HOF!!
Nobody carried baseball better than NBC. Scully and Garagiola were the best!
My uncle won cy young and mvp award in this year year im pride for him.
2:12:33 Vin Scully: “And There It Goes!!” Most memorable Tiger home run of my lifetime. I was 13 then and I appreciated a legend in Vin Scully, while we Tiger fans had another legend in the late Ernie Harwell.
Bless you Boys!! I miss everything I see in this game ,my dad’s love for baseball ,the Tigers is a 1980s winning team the city Detroit actually loving one another
Great game! I was at the game before right over the Padres dugout…Tram came SO close to hitting 3 home runs…I got to meet Stan Musial at the game and he signed my program…total CLASS…the broadcast team is top notch..great to watch and listen to!!
damn i miss that field
Love the shot of Thurmond after Gibson’s first homer. Tigers ran over San Diego’s starters in that series.
The 84 Tigers was an all star line up. Kirk Gibson, Darrel Evans, Chet Lemon, Alan Trammel, Lance Parrish and Lou Whitaker.
1984 was the year that in a 54,000 seating Tiger Stadium, every visit I made to the old ballpark, the attendance was never less than 44,000. What a magical, magical year and Bless You, Boys!
2:12:30 One of the biggest moments in tigers History. Kirk Gibson puts the nail in the coffin
“And there it goes! For Michigan State and all of Tigerdom!” Gotta love it!And what a wonderful rendition of the national anthem by the Univ. of MichiganMen’s Glee Club!
That was one of the best national Anthems I ever heard! Mitch Miller would be proud!
2:12:25 — The overshadowed, forgotten big-time World Series home run by Kirk Gibson. Absolutely CRUSHED it! (off hall of famer Goose Gossage, no less)
That Padres lineup was pretty weak looking to me. At the same time, the Tigers were loaded and had won over 100 games that year. Alan Trammel, Lou Whittaker, Lance Parrish, Kirk Gibson….their lineup was stacked from top to bottom. The Padres never really had a chance.
World Series in the daytime as it’s meant to be! Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola. Baseball as I remember it 👍
1985 World Series, Game 7: Cardinals @ Royals
(c) MLB Vault St. Louis Cardinals 0 at Kansas City Royals 11, F — The “Show-Me Series” came to an end on October 27, 1985 at Royals Stadium when the night after …
There I am sitting behind the Royals dugout on a school night watching my Royals win the world series! What a memory.
Was there in 1985 not long after losing my dad, didn’t get to share that moment with him. Thirty years later I got to share the moment with my 8 year old son. Fathers, sons and baseball.
Over 15 years from 1975-1989… the Kansas City Royals finished in first or second place 13 times. They won 6 division titles, 2 pennants, and 1 World Series.
This was an incredible game, and overall, an awesome series. Would love to see a rematch. Let’s go Royals!
This game was a definite classic. When I saw this game on TV, I was just laughing on how the Cardinals were getting pissed off throughout the game. And when Joaquin Andujar “Lost it” on the mound, that’s what I remembered most of this game. Thank you MLB Classics for uploading this game on You Tube as I will be watching this game for years to come solely for comedic purposes.
Way to go K.C.! Thirty years in the waiting to seal another championship title. Congrats Royals, 2015 champions.
I was one of those running around the pitchers mound. Still have some of the dirt. That was an unbelievable game! One that I’ll never forget.
After MLB said he blew the call after game 6, i’m not sure it was a great idea to let Denkinger call balls and strikes in game 7. The Royals were going to win, because the Cardinals had already decided they lost after game 6.
Lonnie Smith and Terry Pendleton went on to power the Braves todominate theNL East in the 90s. John Schuerholz and an awesome pitching staff had a hand in that too.
I’ve been wanting to see this again for close to 30 years. I was watching when it happened and not having a dog in the fight found Andujar’s meltdown incredibly entertaining.
The Cardinals blew a 3-1 lead in the World Series.
I love the 85 Royals. Brett being my all time favorite. Also, I own Motley’s home white 1983 jersey and it symbolizes for me this mammoth 2 Run HR that he had to hit twice to count! I’ll never forget this team! Glorious!
I just love hearing Al Michaels call any kind of game, but it really is a pleasure to hear him do baseball. And teamed with McCarver and Palmer? Just awesome! And this series was fun to watch, as most in the 80’s were. Great clip here. I was just a kid when this took place, but I remember the frustration boiling over in STL due to Denkinger’s Game 6 fiasco.
When KC gets it right, its spectacular. Chiefs & Royals. Miss you, D. T. Still can’t believe it all.
Re-watching this. I remember all too well that Oct 27th night. Motley’s crushing foul ball by an inch and on the next pitch crushed it again but this time fair! Route was on!
The Cardinals embarrassed themselves in this game.
Saberhagen was a beast of a pitcher back in the 80’s, along side Jack Morris and Dave Stieb.
Go cards. My grandfather worked for Busch Stadium and retired in 1980. My mom would go down to the stadium when she was little and talk to all the players. I have always been interested in baseball and I am a Cardinals fan forever.
Hard to imagine…Saberhagen’s newborn is 28!…reminds me of being 21 and in KC always having felt inferior to the iconic team on the other side of the state. The Cardinals have a great tradition, but to this day, in a city with a St. Louis AA farm team…I can’t really cheer for them because they are the Springfield “Cardinals”…once a Kansas Citian, always a Kansas Citian!
Wow, what a performance from Bret Saberhagen! Game 7, and this guy has ice in his veins. Complete game shutout!? 5 hits allowed all game? A classic!
1975 World Series, Game 6: Reds @ Red Sox
(c) MLB Vault Cincinnati Reds 6 at Boston Red Sox 7, F/12 — Home runs by rookie Fred Lynn, pinch-hitter Bernie Carbo and the Reds’ George Foster made this back-and-forth …
We watched this whole series in college, each game was exciting. I was a Big Red Machine fan, but a lot of my friends were Red Sox fans. Just a great, great series.
40+ years later and I still want to be Fred Lynn when I grow up.
I always felt bad for Fisk and Yaz, great careers and retiring without any rings.
look how fast the pitchers delivered the ball. not much time fiddling on the mound
I was a Reds’ fan, and I am aware of the place this game has in baseball history, but I always point out that the Reds came back to win game seven the following night, and that the 1975 Reds were one of the greatest teams ever.
Watching in New York, this was the greatest post-season game of any sport that I didn’t have an actual rooting interest in. Only the Tom Brady-Kurt Warner show in Super Bowl XXXVI and the 1991 WS between the twins and Braves comes close in this respect.
I watched this when I was a junior in high school. I was devastated being a Reds fan, at the same time I was in awe of what a great game it was. I got most of the Reds autographs in 1973 in San Diego at the Town and Country Hotel. So awesome to walk up to them and ask for an autograph and they would sign without hesitation. I knocked on Sparky Anderson’s hotel door and he answered it and talked to me for about 3 minutes and got an autograph. What a gentleman he was. Most players these days would tell you to “get lost”.
I was a then a New Yorker before moving to New Zealand, and yet even so I cheered every innings for the Boston Red Sox! The greatest game of all time here on tape! ~ Jett Jennings
The Reds had the best record in baseball that year, with 108 wins, .667 winning average. It wasthe best series I ever saw, but the numbers’ speak for themselves. Bench 110 RBI’s, Perez 109 RBI’s & Morgan 94 RBI’s. Awesome!
At 2:58 :00, Stockton in the top of the 11th inning says, “we’ve seen everything- what more could ya ask for?” Well how bout 1 of the greatest catches in World Series history in the top of the 11th, and 1 of the most dramatic home run to end the game!
I was 8 years old, and I remember staying up way beyond bedtime to watch this game with my dad and my two brothers. All I remember is that my dad kept saying, “this is the best baseball game ever played and in the World Series makes all the more better.” The next day school, many teachers and classmates were all sleepy all because we all watched Game 6 in our individual homes. Watching this game brings back great memories of my late father.
great world series, I really enjoyed it back then even though Boston lost, great memories of this special series, especially game six, very exciting contest, what a treat to be able to see again
WOW!!!! What a game! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting one of THE greatest baseball games ever played. Watching this absolute classic reminds me how great the game of baseball is.
3:26:15 you can see a spectator hustling down the aisle from the concessions or bathroom or whatever, right above Darcy. He plops down in his seat literally at the moment Fisk connects. Talk about your great timing!
This game is so legendary, it’s one of the rare times where a game won by the eventual losing team defined the WS. So much so, that Reds catcher Johnny Bench often says (tongue-in-cheek) you get the impression that the Red Sox won, 3 games to 4.
I still get that moment of joy I felt at age 7 watching number 1 round the bases after blasting that honner in the 8th inning.
I don’t even have to look at the screen. Just hearing the voices of Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek take me back to many of my most cherished memories as a youngster.
Watching these 6 games I think that these two teams would have been hard to beat by all other teams in the 70s that made it to the series.
You got to love Dick Stockton’s call of Carlton Fisk’s Home Run in this game as that’s the call you will be hearing forever on that magical moment.
This line up for the Reds is just unforgiving!
1987 World Series, Game 7: Cardinals @ Twins
(c) MLB Vault St. Louis Cardinals 2 at Minnesota Twins 4, F — The 1987 World Series between the Twins and Cardinals brought a whole new meaning to the term “home-field …
That was so cool ,Tom Kelly sitting in the dugout watching his team celebrate is like watching your children open up their Christmas gifts on Christmas morning or sitting on a park bench and watching your kids have fun playing ball, jumping in the water fountain, playing tag… you don’t want to miss the moment.
I just wish I was old enough to appreciate this at the time. GO TWINS
Cornavirus shut the sports world down and here I am, such a great ending to the season. An amazing twins team.
As a Twins fan 27 years removed from the moment and I’m still in awe at how our guys pulled it off.Predicted not to make a ripple in our division.Expected to be nothing but cat food in the ALCS.Beat The Cardinals, the National League’s premier franchise of all teams no less,in the Fall Classic, , no way in HELL!1987 was a long time ago. and I’ve made the trip from peppy teenager tostrolling middle age since then. And I am still In awe.RIPKirby
I had just moved to the Twin Cities from my country the UK and I must say it was the most tremendous game and Series even though I hardly understood the game then but now I’m a die hard Twins fan and always will be.
Being a Twins fan, I thought that these sorts of outcomes were never for us… it was a wonderful night…something we were just not used to but really enjoyed.
I wasn’t even born when the Twins won the World Series but to finally see this now is amazing how a great team they were and still are. Rasied in Rochester, Minnesota, longtime resident of Minneapolis and die-hard Twins baseball fan.
As a Pirates fan, thanks Twins for beating the Braves and Rat birds in the World Series.
How strange. I was 5 in 1987… I am 31 now. My daughter is now 5 years old… The time has passed so quickly! I remember watching these games with my family in MN, and how excited the whole state was after the win!
There is NO EFFIN” way Tom Kelly was just 36 years old when this happened. He looked 55 at least.
“Swing, a bouncing ball to Gaetti, he has it, throws to Hrbek…AND THE TWINS ARE BASEBALL’S WORLD CHAMPIONS!! The World Champion Minnesota Twins!!:” R.I.P. Herb Carneal, radio voice of the Twins
The cards really missed Jack Clark, still you have to give the Twins a lot of credit for the way they played. The Twins fans were really something.
Other than after the Bautista bat-flip home run, I’ve never heard a crowd so loud. And sustained loud too, from the 1st inning. Twins fans hadn’t had much to cheer about for a long time.
Tom Kelly is still the most underrated manager of all time. What he did with teams with less talent than most other teams is truly amaing.
Just watched this in whole.. Way too pumped up for the playoffs this year. Go Twins!!
Awesome series! One of many memories at the (a.k.a. “Thunder Dome”) Metrodome
The sustained crowd noise of over 120 decibels is incredible. The Dome was the loudest house in sports.
That Baylor play at home. I don’t think I’ve ever been so livid watching a game before.
Tom Kelly was the classiest manager ever. I wish he would come back an dmanage the Twins again.
I was at this game and it was one of the best days of my life. I believe some of my hearing loss is due to this very day in the dome! Thank you Dad, for calling for two hours straight to get us tickets to games 6 and 7 to see his two favorite teams play one another. Playing it back andthinking of you in heaven.XXOO
7/10/01: 2001 All-Star Game @ Safeco Field, Seattle
(c) MLB Vault National League 1 at American League 4, F — There was magic in the crisp Seattle air at 2001 Midsummer Classic, as Cal Ripken prepared for his 19th and final …
They said Gwynn was an “honorary all-star”, but he still hit .324 with a .384 OBP and .461 SLG that year. Pretty dang solid for a 20-year vet.
Wow I miss these days. Great lineups on both sides.
27:18Ichiro has to be one of the quickest players to first base in MLB history.
what a great time in baseball, great great players
Cal Ripken Jr was my favorite baseball player growing up next to Chipper Jones. Every day I would not watch anyone else except the Braves and Orioles because of those two and still to this very day I remain a proud fan of both teams.
This was the first All-Star Game that I actually got to watch from start to end and I remember as Cal stepped to the plate in the 3rd Inning and I said to myself, “It would be so cool if he hits a homerun right now”, and sure enough he did. Cal was a class act and I am so glad that I was able to see his final All-Star Game Appearance. It’s memories like this that make this game so special to me.
R.I.P. Tony Gwynn 🙂 Beautiful comments about Berkman around the 1:30:00 mark. This was the first all-star game I ever watched
The last All-Star Game played in the afternoon was in 1969 and it is doubtful there will ever be another one, but because of the late summer sunsets in Seattle this is the only ASG since then to end while it was still daylight outside.
It was Seattle’s finest year – a super powerful team and hosting the All Star game in their only 2 years old stadium. Great until you reach the playoffs…
This was my favorite all star game, go mariners!
I’ve always been an Oriole fan, but I have to believe that pitch to Ripken was served up.
Ballpark announcer: “There has been a change on the field… Starting at shortstop for the American League. The great, Cal Ripken, Jr!” — It still gets me every time I see this. 😂😂😂
イチローはやっぱりすごい。Ichiro is the greatest Japanese baseball player!!
Man I miss this 8 all stars! 4 in starting lineup! Those wee the days
This season was probably the greatest and most memorable in MLB history, if you consider everything. I’m not so sure if anything else will pass it up.
In terms of the starters, it seems that 2001’s All-Stars were the best.
WHAT A HISTORIC AT BAT WE WITNESSED IN THE 1ST INNING! The pitcher with the most Cy Young Awards in history (7) faced the batter with the most MVP’s in history (7) who also happens to be the home run king! And in 2001, Bonds set the MLB single season home run record with 73! While Clemens became the 1st pitcher in MLB history that season to start a season 20-1! THIS. WAS. HISTORIC!!!!!!!!!!!
This was the first MLB all star game I remember watching as a kid
In 2001…*The Seattle Mariners won 116 games, tying a major league record for regular season wins — even after losing Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., and A-Rod the previous three seasons*Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs and won his record fourth MVP award*Roger Clemens won 20 games for the last time in his career and the Cy Young award for the fifth time, becoming the first player to win Cy Young awards for three different teams*Ichiro Suzuki set a record for most regular season hits by a rookie*Albert Pujols played his first season in MLB*John Smoltz returned from shoulder surgery and pitched relief for the first time in his MLB career, eventually becoming the closer for the Atlanta Braves*Tony Gwynn, Cal Ripken Jr., Paul O’Neill, and Mark McGwire played the final seasons of their careers*Sammy Sosa hit 60+ HR in a season for the third time in four years*9/11 put the regular season on hold for a week*The New York Yankees won the ALCS for the fourth consecutive year*Pedro Martinez was on pace for his third consecutive historically dominant season (7-1 with a 1.44 ERA through 11 starts) before injuring his shoulder for a third consecutive season*The Arizona Diamondbacks went to and won the World Series for the first and only time
24:35 Second matchup between Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens They previously faced each other 3 years ago in the 1998 All-Star Game when Clemens was with Toronto. Bonds filed out to left field in that at bat against Clemens.
