Made this out of wood for a school fair stand at my 10 y/o’s school, but with massive gobstoppers instead of toys. All the children (and parents!) loved it and kept coming back for more! I had to go for a quick trip to the stores to buy more gobstoppers! I raised a few hundred pounds towards school and they were very grateful.

Guys don’t waste your time trying to make this crap. Chemically talking, this makes no sens. You cannot disseminate the color particles for two main reasons. 1. The color used in the oil pastels doesn’t pass the vapor test. Which means, when you heat it, it doesn’t fume some colored vapors. 2. Potassium Nitrate, burns way much too high to keep the color particles from being destroyed in the process. So don’t waste your time, unless you just wanna do some white grayish smoke bomb! What you need is real food dye with potassium CHLORATE. Good luck to you all!

Ive seen other vids of people using magnesium instead of potassium nitrate, would it make the same thing or is that a different compound? And is it weaker or stronger than the nitrate?

For everybody commenting about how kno3 isn’t a basic material: If you haven’t researched diy pyrotechnics enough to know what kno3 is, maybe you haven’t researched enough to be messing with pyrotechnics yet. It can be bought at almost any place with a garden section. Its stump remover. It’s like 5 dollars. It isn’t some sort of insane chemical.

What are the ingredients you use for the work?

Tried this.. used lots of oil pastels and the only smoke we got was grey. Looks like there might be some missing steps? Not sure why it wont work :/

Crayons don’t do anything but you can get the potassium nitrate in the form of stump remover at just about any grocery store or amazon.

Ok, now I know what the vapors are up to.

I thought about making these before, idk just for fun. I Love fireworks! But yeah they failed to mention that you definitely shouldn’t do this inside, or over an open flame (like a gas burner or natural gas stove), can be dangerous. Also keep it at a low heat, and again do it outside on a hot plate or something. I have never made these before. But I want to someday. Be awesome to make a giant long one lol and maybe alternate colors in the tube as it goes along ya know. Be safe and happy 4th to everyone!!

Guys, hope this helps everyone: stump remover is pure potassium nitrate. So just go to Lowe’s or Ace Hardware or Home Depot, or really any hardware store should sell stump remover. It’s simple! 😃👍

You should have a pump circulating the water/air in the tall part, otherwise it could become deoxygenated over time.

This is cool and I’ve seen a lot of variations on this created before. I’ve always had an idea to create a terrarium above an aquarium instead. Put a tank upside down, on top of an aquarium of fish, with a “false” bottom that could house terrestrial plants and reptiles. I’ve never built one before but I’ve also never seen anyone else build one. So get to it Youtube.
