Spann the Man! You’ve been my hero ever since you told the people in a Haleyville trail or park not to wait, but to take shelter. “Go Now!” That was quite a few years ago. You saved many lives that night by trusting your instincts, and doing the job you were called to do.You will always be a hero to me. ❤️God bless and keep you and yours.

I’d love to see an updated presentation. I’m under the impression that there’s been groundbreaking data collection and compelling computer modeling that has refined our understanding of tornado formation since this was made. The fundamentals might not have changed, but added detail would be interesting.

Great video James!! You’re Alabama’s best meteorologist and they’re so fortunate to have you looking out for them!! Keep up the great work and continue keeping Alabama’s residents safe during severe thunderstorms and tornadoes ,like on that horrifying day which is April 27th, 2011.

This helped me out with my homework thanks!! I got a 100! My teacher even asked me what I watched or searched so I told her it was this vid!! My class loved it thanks!!!

You gather a bunch of airbenders in one area and make them bend air in swirls.

James Spann is a good man he helps people in the event of Tornado Outbreak by helping them to prepare and keep them safe

Thank you so much for this video! I learned a lot, and I’m so interested. It’s really fun to learn these storms.

This guy is my local meteorologist

The narrator’s voice sounds exactly like a radio meteorologist. [EDIT, so he IS a meteorologist except on television, thanks everyone]

didn’t realize james spann did this. he’s legendary.

Great video, really helps to simplify things… I expected nothing less from TED-ed!

Excelente video!

You forgot to mention a very important ingredient to supercells and their tornadic abilities: Wind shear. This is the factor which causes the air/updraft to rotate.

James, that’s a great explanation of tornadoes and I loved the graphics, which helps visualize what’s going on.

This is amazing. You actually helped me with my science work. Keep up the good work. This is also helerious

Amazing & but scary how nature can start something like that.

Thanks for letting us understanding it in very easy and entertaining manner.

Nice video. In a supercell tornado one gets rotating rising hot air on the outside and falling rotating cold air on the inside. A good way to mix hot air with cold air. Also they form ground up and cloud down, although most of the time we only notice the cloud bit. It is bits like draining a plastic bottle with water. It is quicker to swirl the water out and let the air in. Tornados die when the cold air in the cloud warms up sufficiently to no longer sustain the vortex.

This is so good. I love this channel!:)

Can’t imagine chasing tornados. Even an animated version coming towards me made me feel uneasy lol

Thank God people are complimenting the animators! Wouldn’t want another failed artist.

I feel like the worst acts committed by humans are caused by a person saying “These are your problems, here are the people who caused those problems, and here’s how we’re going to get them before they get us.”

I used to think this was a thing of the past, but now I understand that it is a thing of humans.

Alternate title: *How can YOU rise to power*

“History does not repeat itself but it does rhyme.” Mark Twain.

This describes what is happening in the US. As this video says, it’s a reminder of how fragile a democracy can be when faced with angry crowds and a leader who exploits their fears.

Watching this in 2021 America is beyond frightening.

Moral lesson: Don’t reject anyone from art school

“Political language is needed to make the lie sound true, to make the murder look respectable, and to make the air grab with your hands.” ( George Orwell)

PLEAS TELL THE ANIMATOR HE IS A DAMN TALLENTED GENIUS!

This simple approach works EVERY time: convince listeners that they are victims. They will become followers. Gauranteed!

This is really scary stuff. People still don’t get how easily this can happen.

“These conspiracy theories were born out of fear, anger, and bigotry not fact.” It just gave me goosebumps and made me shudder.

An episode for Mussolini would be needed, his rise to power is way more actual

The animator isn’t going to get declined to go to an art school.

This is a good summary, however the role of France and England in forcing war reparations upon Germany – as if Germany were solely responsible for WWI – and redistributing German colonies amongst themselves, should not be ignored. In contrast, the US President Wilson behaved far more responsibly, refusing to take over German colonies.

Studying with a passion for the visuals, incorporating art into it through these beautiful, telling animations and textures, makes history much more tangible and heart felt. We should really do this always. What a great video lesson.

4:28 In case you were wondering why someone would execute the same people who helped them into power, check out “The Rules for Rulers” by CGP Grey.

Its scary how many parallels can be drawn between this and whats going on in America at the moment.

The moral of the story is: Fear is a path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.

(c) TED-Ed View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/debunking-the-myths-of-ocd-natascha-m-santos There’s a common misconception that if you like to meticulously …

*”Knowing that your own brain is lying to you while not being able to resist it’s commands can be agonizing.”*That was so true it hurt.

My boyfriend has OCD and he tries so hard to control it. Its really distressing to see how he suffers almost every day, yet Im so proud of him for being this brave and fighting it ♥️

At the end when he said OCD is knowing your brain is lying to you and not being able to control it-that summed it more succinctly than I think anyone ever could. I’ve been living with OCD since I can remember. I took meds for 7 years and have developed a lot of skills to live better day to day. But OCD is something that will always be with me in some capacity. That’s the thing I will always have to accept. But it can get better.

If you suffer from intrusive thoughts that bring on anxiety, embarrassment or disgust, remember that those thoughts don’t reflect on you as a person, the reason they’re intrusive in the first place is because you don’t want to have them and the fact they bring on such a negative reaction from you proves that those thoughts are simply part of the disorder, it’s not who you really are

Radically accepting intrusive thoughts as part of my life has really helped me. It’s scary sometimes- it’s like praying for something you don’t want- but overcoming and adapting is an anchor 💪🏼

Having OCD is actually really serious, people should really stop using this word randomly as a joke….

It hurts me when people say “I’m so OCD”. I have OCD and most people think it is keeping every thing perfect or continuously organizing. I hope this video reaches the people that think that way to help them have a better understanding of OCD and to clear up stereotypes.

Hey, for anyone suffering OCD, therapy is HIGHLY effective. I know someone who has made huge strides with it in a very short amount of time – months not years. OCD is one of the more highly treatable conditions. Someone who specializes in “exposure therapy” or ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) can really help you get to a much better state of mind. Don’t feel like you have to live this way, there is really effective help!

I used to suffer from anxiety and OCD at a young age and only recently have I recovered. I still remember the terrifying feelings and extremes very vividly, to anyone who is suffering from OCD I believe in you even if you think it is impossible I promise it is not. Please don’t give up, I went through many different therapies and medication ( and helpline calls and hospital trips.) but I promise you life is so much better on the other side. And to anyone who doesn’t know what OCD feels like the best way I can describe it is that OCD genuinely feels like a physical barrier preventing you from controlling your actions.

I was diagnosed with OCD in high school, but have been struggling with it since I was a young kid. A lot of people have misconceptions about the disorder, so it’s really nice to see an accurate depiction of it. Thanks for taking the time to make this video 🙂

OCD is not being a perfectionistOCD is not just a type a personalityOCD is not getting triggered by everything not being perfectOCD is a disorder

The main aspect that seperates people who like things in order, or who clean more regularly than others, is the emotional component. People with OCD have to do things, or they feel extremely anxious.

There was a description of OCD once I’ve read in a book on the topic, that I’ve never heard anywhere else, but that really resonated with me. Which was: OCD is like the constant feeling of something being amiss.

I have it. I recently came up with a metaphor for how OCD feels for me. It’s sort of like that feeling when you’re driving down a two lane highway and you feel nervous in that any mistake, however small, could end in disaster. But I have that feeling every waking moment, every day. It’s really debilitating. When I hear people misuse the term OCD I sort of turn off emotionally, it hurts in a way that’s very difficult to describe. Anyone out there who suffers from it just know that you’re not alone and there are medical professionals who really know what they’re doing. 🙏

I have “bed time” OCD. At one point my routine lasted an hour and if certain “checks” weren’t done in a particular fashion I would sweat profusely and have to get up to do them “properly”. I’d have to check the door 5 times even though I know it’s locked, and run my hand under kitchen taps 5 times to make sure they were off even though my eyes can clearly see they’re off. Over several years I “trained” myself to remove some of the items off the routine like checking the clothes in the wardrobe, and found that slowly I was able to get to something “acceptable” that isn’t agonising. I still suffer with it today but most nights im not getting out of bed 20 times to repeat checks. For anyone out there also suffering, just know that with dedication you can “train” your brain to let go and get to a state that isn’t so agonising.

OCD needs to be discussed more in the media. Thank you for bringing attention to this.

I have OCD and for me it’s scary thoughts! It literally makes me mentally exhausted. Once on medicine my thoughts are better but I still get stuck sometimes. This video is me 100%!

I understand what ocd is now and I hope recovery for those with it goes well. I saw many comments talking about how people saying “ oh I’m so ocd” and stuff. I was one of those people. I didn’t understand it then. My teachers in elementary educated me and other people in my class about ocd. There was always constant jokes about ocd and we kept going because nobody spoke up about it. I understand now what ocd truly is and I hope others find out as well. Thanks Ted Ed for this video and the people in my life who educated me properly.

As someone who has diagnosed OCD this is so true and people who say they have it to get attention don’t realize how hard it really is.

How ironic, a coworker called another coworker “ocd” because he made sure he put his tools away in a certain order. I overheard and told him thats not “ocd”. It’s unfortunate a serious brain disorder is used as a joke and slander when someone does something as simple as properly organize their belongings.

Can you solve the counterfeit coin riddle? – Jennifer Lu

Can you solve the counterfeit coin riddle? - Jennifer Lu (c) TED-Ed

(c) TED-Ed View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/can-you-solve-the-counterfeit-coin-riddle-jennifer-lu You’re the realm’s greatest mathematician, but ever since you …

And then the King realized that the marker was permanent and… threw you back to jail…

“The coins were already in the treasury” Yet, you are presented with only 12. This king is sure rich

“You’re the realm’s greatest mathematician.”Guys, I think we have a bigger problem here than a counterfeit coin.

0:52 But the Emperor’s not a patient man**Weigh pieces of money one by one in 2 minutes**Emperor : Too slow!**Think in 2 hours of a possibility to only use balance 3 times**Emperor : Fast enough

I refused to watch the solution when this video came out and I have been thinking about this riddle for years.Today I finally figured it out. I can’t express how satisfied I feel.

Me, an intellectual: “So this is how you solve Captain Holt’s island riddle…”

Here’s another way to solve this: 1. Check if you have green eyes2. Ask the counterfeit coin to leave

“I’ve figured it out!”…Watches solution…”I didn’t figure it out.”Me with all of these videos, pretty much.

When the emperor realizes that it took me longer to figure it out then to balance the scale 11 times

the emperor is an impatient man.*literally lets you think for eternity*

“6) There’s no bribing the guards or any other trick.”they know our ways.

Me:*calls a random coin counterfeit since the king wouldn’t question the best mathematician’s choice*

Alternatively, if you know the counterfeit is lighter, you could split the pile in half, then weigh them. Take the lighter side and then split it in half again, take this batches lighter side and put two of the coins on the scale. If they weigh the same, the third is counterfeit, if one is lighter, there’s your counterfeit. This is a lot easier for me to remember than their solution, but obviously it requires you to know about this kingdom’s counterfeit coin production.

“But the emperor it’s an impatient man” *Also the emperor when he realizes that this procedure takes 10 times the amount of time you would have used if only you were allowed to use the scale however tf you want* “-_-“

My Solution: 1) Think for 10 minutes and tell the King you’re ready.2) GO mental with the marker and mark all the coins after randomly weighing them. 3) Pick one coin and tell the King that’s the counterfeit. King doesn’t know either, so you have survived. Cheers.

I figured it out but in a different way, first time solving a Ted Ed riddle without misunderstanding the rules. I started similarly, and if the weight was balanced I did the same thing too. But if one side is off, then I can take 1 – coin and 2 +coins on one side, and 2 +coins and 0 coin on the other side. If the weight is balanced again it’s one of the 3 light ones I didn’t use and that’s easy to figure out, just test 2.If the weight is heavy on the side with the – and 2 +, that means it’s one of the 2 + coins, which is also easy to figure out. If the weight is heavier on the side with 2 + coins and 1 0, that means it’s either one of the + coins, or the – coin, I can just test the 2 + coins and that would tell me which one of those 3 it is. I DID IT!

I did it in a different way, but using some of the same underlying principles: I divided the coins in 3 sets of 4. I measure 2 of those 3 sets against each other. If they have the same weight, then I conclude that the false coin is among the last set that I didn’t weigh. Then I take 2 of these 4 potential coins that I weigh against 2 verified coins. If there is a difference of weight, then it means that the counterfeit is among the 2 potential ones I just weighed. Then I take 1 of these 2 that I weigh against a verified one, and if there is still a difference, then it’s that one potential coin. If there is not, it’s the other potential one.If there is no difference of weight, then it means that the counterfeit is among the 2 potential ones I didn’t weigh yet. I do the same process as above and find the counterfeit coin in 1 measure. Now let’s imagine that the 2 sets of 4 coins that I originally weighed didn’t have the same weight. Then, I write a “+” on all the coins that are on the heavier platter, and a “-” on all the coins of the lighter platter. Then, I take 2 “+” coins and 1 “-” coins that I put aside. On the platters are left, on one side, 3 “-” coins and on the other 2 “+” coins.Like this: – – – vs. + + I add 1 verified coin (“0”) to the platter with the “+” coins.Like this: – – – vs. + + 0Then I switch 1 “-” coin and 1 “+” coin between the platters.Like this: – + – vs. + – 0And I proceed to measure. (This is my 2nd measure.) 3 things can happen from there:1) The two platters weigh the same: this means that the counterfeit coin is among the 3 coins (2 “+” and 1 “-“) that I put aside after the first measure. I just have to weigh the 2 “+” coins against each other. If they weigh equally, then it’s the left “-” coin. If they don’t, then it’s the heavier coin.2) The two platters don’t weigh the same, and the balance changed (the heavier platter became the lighter one and vice versa): this necessarily implies that the counterfeit coin is still on the balance, but it changed side. Since I switched 2 coins, it necessarily means that the counterfeit coin is one of them. I just have to take 1 and measure it against a verified coin: if there is a difference in weigh, then it’s the 1 switched coin I just measured. If there is no difference, then it”s the other one. 3) The two platters don’t weigh the same, and the balance is unchanged: this necessarily implies that the counterfeit coin is still on the balance, among the coins that didn’t change side and are not verified (which are 2 “-” and 1 “+”). I just have to take the 2 “-” coins and weigh them against each other. If there is no difference in weight, then it’s the “+” coin. If there is a difference, then it’s the lighter one.It might seem more complicated but I like this one (because I found it lol). It took me a couple hours though. Frustrating but I’m happy to have done it!

The emperor: isn’t patientAlso emperor: lets me think hours before solving this problem, instead of using the machine

I solved this, but with an easier method that prevents the scenario where you have the 4vs4 coins with an imbalance (leading to those complicated steps afterwards). So… For the few interested: 1. You balance 3vs3. If its even, the odd coin is amongst the other 6 coins. If its uneven, one of those measured 6 is the odd one. 2. You take 3 out of the 6 coins where the odd one is and measure those against 3 of the other 6 (the ones you know are standard for sure). If there is an imbalance, you know that the odd coin is amongst those 3 and you also get to know if it is either heavier or lighter than the others. Out of the last 3 coins you measure 2 and determine it as in the video. If you have the case that there is a balance when you take the 3vs3 from step 2, you know that the odd coin is amongst the other 3 you did not measure. I just realised while finishing that sentence, that there is no way of determining the odd one in this case since you still don’t know if its lighter or heavier, thus making the 1vs1 measurement in the end useless and f*cking up my whole approach. Anyway, took me way to long to write this so im going to post it anyway for your entertainment. Thanks for reading 🙂

Perhaps I am thinking about this wrong but it would seem to me the way to do this would be..1. Divide the 12 coins into Two stacks of six each. Place six on each side of the scale. The heavier side contains the fake coin.2. Divide the six remaining coins into two stacks of three and weigh them. The heavier stack contains the fake coin.3. Finally place one of the three remaining coins on one side of the scale and one of the three remaining coins On the other side. If they weigh the same the one you didn’t weigh is the fake. If one is heavier than the other then that is the fake coin.Unless I am missing something that would seem to be the quickest and most logical way to do it.

Why elephants never forget – Alex Gendler

Why elephants never forget - Alex Gendler (c) TED-Ed

(c) TED-Ed View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/why-elephants-never-forget-alex-gendler It’s a common saying that elephants never forget. But the more we learn …

Can we just take a moment and appreciate this amazingly cute animation

Humans never forget:1. Who broke their heart.2. Who owe them money.

I read that elephants seeing humans is equivalent to us humans seeing a very cute puppy. They find us irresistibly cute.😂😂

I have a real story on an elephant.I live in Kerala , India and here there are lots of elephants. Both wild and domestic. Domestic once mainly used for temple festivals. In a festival with many elephants there a keshavan( male elephant). One crazy man throws a stone on him and man ran away. It’s hurt the elephant he taken that stone and kept it with him for many years. Years passed away one day in a festival place elephant saw that man and he give it back to him.

That’s why elephants are my favourite. They have emotions, they have selfless love for each other, and for other creatures, too! <3

It’s hard to understand how people could hurt such a magnificent animal.

Did u know that elephants actually mourn over deaths they have caused accidentally and they tend to visit that site at least for 3 days after the incident .

Knowing elephants can suffer from PTSD breaks my heart even more knowing Kaavan lived alone in dire conditions for so long.Lets protect these magnificent animals and all others. Treat them with kindness.. who would want to live in a world without these beautiful beings? ❤️ 🌍

Elephants are so amazing. My mom absolutely loves them and has a big shelf in her house dedicated to elephant stuff like figurines and elephants carved from stones, wood, etc. Our family took a trip to Nepal a few years ago and my mom got a chance to ride one and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her that happy. She was laughing the whole time. Even when it got close to the water and took a drink and then shot it out through it’s trunk at her face, she had the biggest smile on.

My mom used to work for 15 years in a zoo that had two elephants. She has always been a huge animal lover and when she heard the zoo was searching for an employee she was overjoyed.Over the 15 years she had developed a strong bond with the elephants. One time she was cleaning in a barn, the elephant strated to examine her new walkie-talkie that she had got in the morning. After my mom prohibited that, so that the channels from it’s radio wouldn’t get messed up, the elephant stopped. After a while the elephant leaned her tusk’s towards my mom, which was their play where the elephant lifted my mom to the fence to get scratching. So my mum grabbed her tusk snd she lifted her like they had used to, but this time she let my mom to hung in a fence and my mom wondered what it was all about. Then she felt the elephant strarting to test for buttons from the walkie-talkie with her trunk, because the elephant new my mom wouldn’t let her to do so otherwise. As I have understood the fence wasn’t that high and because of their long relationship mom was rather amused than frightened about the event. And she learned that it was better showing everything new to the elephant and letting her to examine for a while, because then it wouldn’t bother her.My mom would have many stories about the elephant that I haven’t heard, but this is the one that shows how intelligent being an elephant is.She has also told me that when she had been in a hospital a while for giving birth and therefore weren’t able to go to work. The elephant would give her a silent treatment after she had returned. My mom was trying to talk her to come meet her in the doorway but she insisted it by standing facing in different direction. After a while my mom told that she would be leaving and strated to walk towards the door but the elephant grabbed her with her trunk before she would have left and they hugged each other’s.I couldn’t help but tell these stories for it touches me everythime thinking about it. What a wonderful beings!

elephants are so underrated honestly

This is so true in Kenya where elephants have been known to co-exist with the Maasai people for generations but get agitated in the presence of other people because of previous poaching attack experience 👆🏼

rip to those elephants whose loved ones died 😭

It would have been so amazing if human memory was also as good as elephants Student life would have been a piece of cake

My grandma loved elephants alot, I never really got why though. After watching this I can say I love them alot too. I want to have an elephant friend lol

The illustrator clearly deserves a raise mann thats the cutest animation ever😂😍😍

I feel pity after watching the video. At first I thought it was a pity for such an intelligent and sympathetic animal not able to change the world and live a convenient life as we do. But then I realized I should feel sad for humans, because though we are smart and creative, we don’t use our intelligence to make the world better; though we’re sympathetic, we don’t always have the willingness or courage to stand for the disadvantaged, the voiceless or even people we love. What a pity.

Very informative video. MOSTLY accurate, except the part that says (Elephants are the only non-human animals to mourn their dead) many other animals mourn their dead

this actually made me emotional. i always felt like elephants had a high emotional intelligence and this video confirmed it im gonna cry harder while watching dumbo now 🙁

I almost lived with temple Elephants.Whenever I go to temple procession, some elephant comes to me & caress my head. They remember our affection.
